Why have I stopped getting new news articles?
Following some problems with the main news server, the beta server was brought
into service in its place. This means that most news readers won't recognise the presence of new
articles until their internal counters are reset. Here are the solutions for THOR and MicroDot-II.
THOR
Download ResetNews.lha (1517K).
Unarchive this file and copy ResetNews.thor to your Thor/Rexx directory,
and run it from Thor's Arexx Script menu. After the next collection of news, you will need to
select "Delete Duplicates" from THOR's General menu.
MicorDot-II
MicoDot doesn't have a mean of resetting the counters manually. To fool it into thinking
they need changing, change the news server address to anythin in the Account settings and
click OK.
MicroDot will ask if you want to reset the message pointers, click Reset. Now go back into
the Account settings, change the server back to news.u-net.com and click OK and Reset again.
Explanation
If you are interested in why this change needed to be made. A newsreader keepos track of which
articles if has downloaded by recording the number of the highest article in each newsgroup.
The next time you collect news, it collects all articles after this one and stores the new high number.
When the server was switched, the article numbers on the new one are different. They are lower
because it is a newer server. This means your newsreader thinks it has already got all of the
articles on the server, because it has stored higher numbers than any of the articles offered.
Resetting the counters make the newsreader forget its previous placemarkers and strart again.
